Dash for Dollars

Moonlight Walk/Jog to Support Bellingham Scholars

Through Bellingham Dollars for Scholars Foundation

The inaugural Dash for Dollars, set for Fri., June 4th is a community-wide event to raise awareness and money for the student scholars in Bellingham.  Sponsored by the Bellingham Dollars for Scholars Foundation, the Dash for Dollars is a moonlight walk/jog along Bellingham’s waterfront.  Clad in ‘Glo-in-the-Dark’ necklaces, each “Dasher” secures pledges for their walk or jog efforts with the proceeds benefiting the scholarship fund.

Beginning at 9:00 p.m. at the Bellwether Ballroom on Tom Glenn Mall, the “dashers” walk/jog around the Marina Restaurant, Anthony’s Home Port, the Port of Bellingham Offices and back along Bellwether Way  – a mile route.  Remember your elementary school walkathons/jogathons?  The Dash for Dollars is basically a modified elementary school-style walkathon with each dasher securing pledges for a specific amount per mile “lap” or a flat amount for the entire “dash”.  (brochure to follow soon)

Following the walk/jog, “dashers” and their friends will move into the Bellwether Ballroom for the Awards Celebration, pizza and pop, and a fun dance for all.  Bellingham

Alumni Band along with student bands will entertain until 11:30 p.m.  Because the “Dash” is not

a competitive run, the event is open to ALL to participate – joggers, walkers, strollers, &

wheelchairs!  Incentives for those raising the most money will be available.

The Bellingham chapter of Dollars for Scholars is a local non-profit organization affiliated with the national organization of Dollars for Scholars.  Bellingham Dollars for Scholars provides scholarships to attend post-secondary education/training to the graduating seniors of

Bellingham’s four high schools (Squalicum, Bellingham, Sehome, and Options).  As one organization serving all four local high schools, we provide scholarships to encourage and support our local graduates who hope to continue their education, but may be unable to for financial reasons.  Nineteen deserving 2003 graduates earned scholarships through Bellingham Dollars for Scholars to help them continue their educations.  The first annual Dash for Dollars for Bellingham Scholars hopes to raise community awareness about the increasing need for scholarships for our graduates and to raise money to give more scholarships in the coming years for our students.

The Dash for Dollars, along Bellingham’s waterfront also showcases the work of the Waterfront Futures Group.  The WFG, as a citizen task force appointed by the Port and City, has been working on a vision and action plan for Bellingham's waterfront for the past year. After much research and public input, their recommended Vision, Framework, and Action Plans will be displayed at the Dollars for Scholars event. As Patricia Decker, Executive Director of the Waterfront Futures Group says,

“The Futures Group is grateful for the Dollars for Scholars choice of venue - what better            way to celebrate our waterfront than to be there to enjoy it    at sunset!”

Join the fun at the first annual Dash for Dollars, June 4th on Bellingham’s waterfront.  Support Bellingham’s deserving high school graduates continue their education by sponsoring or participating in the Dash for Dollars – a Moonlight Walk/Jog to support Bellingham scholars

through Bellingham Dollars for Scholars Foundation.
