Bellingham Dollars for Scholars (BDFS) was established in 2002 to provide scholarships to deserving graduates from Bellingham’s four public high schools. Since that time, BDFS has awarded 380 scholarships totaling more than $300,000. In 2009, BDFS became a program of the Whatcom Community Foundation. This new relationship combines the skills and dedication of BDFS volunteers on the Fund Advisory Committee with the professional experience and administration of the Foundation.
Why Give Your Scholarship Through Bellingham Dollars for Scholars?
BDFS benefits everyone involved:
Donors
- Greater visibility – BDFS works to promote and recognize its donors, their scholarships and student recipients, providing increased visibility for all involved.
- Tax Benefits – As a program of the Whatcom Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization designated as a 501(c)(3) by the IRS, contributions to BDFS are tax deductible.
- Larger Applicant Pool – More students are encouraged to apply for scholarships through BDFS because they can complete one application and meet one deadline.
- We Make it Easy for You – The streamlined BDFS program simplifies the logistics for donors, students and counselors. Your scholarship fund is designed based on your goals.
Students
- Simplicity – Students complete one application.
Two Partner Programs
Collegiate Partners are among more than 500 colleges and universities nationwide that have pledged to keep student financial aid packages intact, rather than reducing them by the amount of the BDFS scholarship award.
Collegiate Matching Partners include more than 120 colleges and universities (including six in Washington state) that have agreed to match BDFS scholarship awards!
The Community
A single, coordinated plan for local scholarships creates excitement about helping students to continue their education. More people are encouraged to contribute, supporting more scholarships, and our community becomes even more focused on the benefits of education.
